The New York State Pathways in Technology Early College High School (NYS P-TECH) is a state-funded initiative to link education to regional economic development. Students in this program will earn an associate degree at no cost to their families and will first in line for jobs with participating business partners. Winning partnerships were selected through a highly competitive process and represent leading industries in each of the state's 10 Regional Economic Development Council areas.
The P-TECH project in Western New York, a public-private collaboration between Erie 1 BOCES, Lackawanna School District, Trocaire College, and the Catholic Health System, is called P-TECH HOPE and prepares students for a career path in healthcare. HOPE stands for Health Occupations Pathways to Employment. Students attending high school in Lackawanna are recruited prior to their freshman year, and are able to choose among a number of health-related career paths including Radiologic Technology, Surgical Technology, Nutrition and Dietetics and Health Information Technology. Students participate in a structured, supportive system staffed by partnership members, obtain credit for college-level courses while still enrolled in high school, receive a free college education leading to an Associate's degree, and have first consideration for jobs within the Catholic Health System.
